Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame includes tennis players Ilie Năstase and Ion Țiriac, the jumper Iolanda Balaș, ice hockey players Eduard Pană and Doru Tureanu, gymnasts Nadia Comăneci, Ecaterina Szabo, Teodora Ungureanu, Daniela Silivaş, Simona Amânar, Lavinia Miloşovici and gymnast coaches Bela Karolyi and Octavian Bellu.[1]

 

Romanians Playing Sports

60% of Romanians did not play any sports at all in 2013 (11% more than in 2009), very close to the average European level (59%). 18% of them played some sports, but seldom (10% less than in 2009), 15% of Romanians play sports with some regularity (2% more than in 2009) and 6% of them play sports regularly (2% less than in 2009).[2]

89% of urban Romanians were connected to sports (practice, read or watch). Around 38% of urban Romanians were connected to sports, but did not practice it.[3]

61% of urban Romanians interested in sports practiced jogging in the previous year.(2014), 31% more than in 2013.[4]

8% of Romanians exercised at least five times a week, 6% at least three or four times a week, 7% once or two times a week and 49% did not exercise at all in 2015.[5]

Main Clubs

The main clubs in Romania were Steaua Bucureşti, Dinamo Bucureşti and Oltchim Râmnicu-Vâlcea (handball). The Canoeist Ivan Patzaichin, the rowers Elisabeta Lipă, Georgeta Andrunache, Doina Ignat, the football players Dudu Georgescu, Dorin Mateuţ,  Flavius Koczi (pommel-horse), Marius Urzică (pommel-horse) played for Dinamo Bucureşti. The football players Miodrag Belodedici, Gheorghe Hagi, Helmut Duckadam, Gheorghe Popescu, the handball players Gheorghe Gruia and Cristian Gaţu, the swimmer Camelia Potec, the fencer Laura Badea  played for Steaua Bucureşti. Emerich Jenei and Anghel Iordănescu trained Steaua. Mircea Lucescu trained Dinamo. Steaua won the European Champion Clubs’ Cup  in 1986. Oltchim Râmnicu-Vâlcea won five major European competitions (1983-two, 1988, 2006-2007 –two). [1]

Constructions

The National Stadium

The National Stadium cost around 230 million dollars and its construction lasted 43 months. It was finished in 2011. Visibility is good from any seat, the chairs are comfortable, and the acoustic is very good. The capacity is 55,000 spectators. The quality is Elite, according to UEFA standards. There were serious problems about the lawn and the roof. The new National Stadium was constructed on the ground of the old National Stadium, demolished in 2007.[1] [2] [3]

The Biggest Multi-purpose Room in Romania

The biggest multi-purpose room in Romania is in Cluj. The modern construction, opened in 2014, has 38,410 square metres and can shelter 7,000-10,000 spectators.[4]

The Olympic Rink

Ion Ţiriac constructed an Olympic covered rink in Otopeni (Bucharest Ilfov) at the end of 2016. The cost of building the rink was 3.5 million-3.9 million Euros. The rink is the first private Olympic rink in Romania. The rink has 500 seats, but could have 1,000 seats if needed.[5]

Improper Constructions

A lot of gyms and swimming pools were constructed, but some of them in improper places, where there were very few children. Some firms made very good profits.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Gymnast Referee Salaries

The gymnast referee salaries are extremely low, about 900 lei (close to the minimum salary -750 lei), Mariana Bitang said in 2013. There is no paid permanent doctor to take care of the gymnasts and no choreographer, she added.[1]

Medical Exemption

“Half of Romanian pupils have medical exemption”, Gabriel Ispas, an official in the Education Ministry, declared in 2013.[2]

International Referees

Nicolae Rainea

Nicolae Rainea (born 1933) was the best Romanian referee, a great international referee and a former football player. He became a referee by mistake, when a linesman was needed. He refereed many intern and international matches, three Final Tournaments of World Cup: Germany 1974, Argentine 1978, Spain 1982, the European Championship in 1980, the European Championship final in 1980, Italy (Belgium-West Germany 1-2), three UEFA finals, the European Championships Clubs” Cup Final (1983, Hamburg- Juventus 1-0), the European Supercup Final (1978, Liverpool – Anderlecht 2-1). He is UEFA observer and town council in Galați.[1] [2]

Adrian Porumboiu

Adrian Porumboiu was a football player and an international referee, is federal observer, a businessman and the owner of FC.Vaslui team. Ciprian Porumboiu (scenographer and director) is his son.[3]

Ion Crăciunescu

Ion Crăciunescu was a football player, a referee (including 80 international matches), and is the president of Universitatea Craiova. He is federal observer and FIFA observer [4] and is the head of referees in Romania.[5]

Other referees

Ovidiu Haţegan is in ‘Elite’ category. Alexandru Tudor and Istvan Kovacs (since December 2015) are ‘First’ Category referees (August 2015). [6] [7]Marius Avram, Sebastian Colțescu, Radu Petrescu and Cristian Balaj are in ‘Second’ category (December 2015).[8]

Nadia Comăneci (born November 12, 1981, Onești) is considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, a landmark in gymnastics history.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

She was the daughter of Gheorghe and Ștefania and has a brother, Adrian. Doctors said she had a malformation and if survived, she would have marked by a handicap. Following her grandma advice, Nadia”s mother took her daughter to church and the malformation was gone. Nadia”s grandfather took her in his arms and saved her from dying of the roof collapsing.[7]

Nadia was named after Nădejdea (‘Hope’), a movie heroine. She was discovered by Bela Caroly, later his coach, at the age of 6.[8]

Nadia won all five gold medals of Romanian Cup at the age of ten and became national champion at the age of eleven.[9]

Maturity

She participated in (the) European Championship in Skien (Norvege), 1975, where she beat the Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva, the five-time European champion, winning four gold medals and one silver medal.[10]

Nadia won the American Cup in New York City, in 1976. In this contest she performed a backward double salto as a dismount from the uneven parallel bars, a gymnastic innovation.[11]

Nadia Comăneci was awarded the first perfect ten in an Olympic contest in gymnastics history in Montreal Olympic Games, 1976. She received six more ten in the same competition. She won three gold medals on balance beam, uneven bars, and the all-around individual competition.[12] Nadia was named a Hero of Socialist Labor by her country, becoming the youngest person with such distinction.[13]

Nadia Comăneci won two gold medals on uneven bars (şi la individual compus) in European Championship in 1977. But Romania withdrew from the competition protesting against referees.

In 1977 Bela Caroly was no longer his coach. Her parents divorced in 1978. The teenager Nadia was confused and swallowed a whitening substance and got to the hospital.[14]

She won the European Championship in 1979.

Nadia won two gold medals on balance beam and floor in Moscow Olympic Games, in 1980.

After Sport Career

When Bela and Maria Karoly left the country in 1981, the communist authorities forbade her to leave the country again.[15] Nadia illegally passed the frontier with Hungary in November 1989 (the communist authorities forbid any ordinary people leaving the country as a general rule), then went to Austria and then United States. She married a former American gymnast, Bart Conner, in 1996 and has a son, Dylan.

Nadia Comăneci is involved in charity missions, gymnastics and business. She wrote two books, an autobiography, Nadia (1981), and a book on mentoring, Letters to a Young Gymnast (2003).

Bela Caroly was her coach for the most part of career.

Awards

Comăneci was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1993

She received the Olympic Order (the most prestigious award given by the International Olympic Committee) twice, in 1984 and 2004).

In 1999, ABC News and „Ladies Home Journal” named her as one of the „100 Most Important Women of the 20th Century.”[16]

Inventions

Nadia Comăneci invented two moves (bearing her name afterwards) on the uneven bars. One is a toe-on, half-turn to a back flip dismount, while the other is a release move (a cast to straddle front flip) that is still rated at a high difficulty level today. (It is an “E” on an A-G scale, with “A” as the easiest.)[17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] [23]

Sandra Izbaşa

Sandra Izbaşa won the golden medal in 2008 Beijing Olympic Games (floor) and was multiple European champion (2006, Volos-floor, 2008 Clermont, two- floor and with the team, 2011 Berlin, two-floor and vault). [1] [2] [3]

Lavinia Miloşovici

Lavinia Miloşovici won gold medals in 1992 Barcelona Olympics  (two-vault, floor), 1991 Indianapolis World Championships -vault, 1992 Paris- Uneven Bars, 1993 Birmingham Balance Beam, 1994 Dortmund with the team, 1995 Sabae, with the team, European Championship (1994-Stochholm-two-vault and with the team, 1996, Birmingham two-floor and with the team). Andreea Răducan

Andreea Răducan won gold medal in 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, with the team, gold medals in World Championships (Tianjin 1999-two-floor and with the team, Ghent 2001, three-floor, balance beam and with the team).[1] [2]

Oana Corina Constantin

Oana Corina Constantin was the world female aerobic gymnastics champion in 2016 Aerobic Worlds, Incheon (KOR)[1]

Marian Drăgulescu

Marian Drăgulescu was multiple world champion (Ghent 2001, two-floor and vault, Debrecen 2002-floor, Melbourne 2005-vault, 2006 Aarhus two- floor and vault, 2009 London, two-floor and vault, multiple European champion (2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006).[2] [3] [4] He became international referee.[5]

Flavius Koczi

Flavius Koczi won the gold medal in 2012 European Championship in Montpellier (France). He also won gold medal in Volos (Greece), in 2006, (pommel-horse) and in Berlin (Germany), 2011 (floor). He played for Dinamo București.[6]  Flavius Koczi won the gold medal at France Internationals (floor), in March 2013.[7]

Marius Urzică

Marius Urzică (pommel-horse) won 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, World Championships (1994, Brisbane, Australia, 2001, Gent, Belgium, 2002, Debretin, Hungary), European championships (1994, Prague, Czech, 2003 Ljubljana, Slovenia). [1] [2] [3] [4] He played for Dinamo București.[5]

Dan Grecu

Dan Grecu (rings) won first gold medal in Romanian gymnastics history. He won 1974 World Championships, in Varna, Bulgaria, 1975 European championship in Bern, Suitzerland-??. [6] [7]

Athletics

The best Romanian athletes were Iolanda Balaş, Maricica Puică, Doina Melinte, Gabriela Szabo, Constantina Diță-Tomescu, Corina Colonelu Moşoianu and Claudia Ştef.

Iolanda Balaş

Iolanda Balaş dominated the jumping probe in 1956-1966. She improved the world record fourteen times from 1.75m (1956) to 1.91m (1961). This performance lasted ten years till 1971. She won 140 contests in a row (1958-1967), entering into the Guinness Book Records. In 1958 Iolanda was the first woman jumping six feet (1.83m). She was Olympic champion (1960, 1964) and European champion (1958, 1962, 1966-indoor). [1] [2] [3] [4]

Doina Melinte

Doina Melinte won a gold medal in the 800 metres at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She won gold medals in the 1500 metres in the European Indoor Championships (1985, 1988 and 1990). In 1987 Doina set a new championship record: 4.05.68-1500 metres at the 2nd World Indoor Championships. In 1990 she set a European record time 4.00.27-1500 metres. Doina Melinte was the fastest female running one mile indoors.(26 years, till the performance of Genzebe Dibaba 4.13.31, 2016)[1] [2] [3] [4]

Gabriela Szabo

Gabriela Szabo won gold medal at 2000 Sydney in the 5,000 metres and won three times World Championships (1997, 1999-5,000 m, 2001-1,500m). [1] [2]

Maricica Puică

Maricica Puică won gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics, in Los Angeles, in the 3000 metres.[1] [2] [3]

Constantina Diță-Tomescu

Constantina Diță-Tomescu won 2008 Summer Olympics at 38 years of age, becoming the oldest Olympic marathon champion in history. She also won 2005 World Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton, Canada, and 2004 Chicago Marathon.[1] [2]

Paula Ivan

Paula Ivan settled an Olympic record in the 1500 metres contest: 3:53.96 in 1988, in Seul; the record, better with almost three seconds than the previous one, is still unbeaten. The record ranked 7th all time. Laimute Baikauskaite, the second runner, arrived after over six seconds, the largest difference ever in an Olympic final at that distance.[1]

Performances

The best national team performance was acceding to 1994 World Cup quarters of finals, in United States.[1] The team was trained by Anghel Iordănescu.[2]

Steaua Bucureşti is the best Romanian football team, won 1986 European Champion Clubs’ Cup, 1987 European Super Cup, and was the finalist of 1989 European Champion Clubs’ Cup  [3]

Steaua still holds the record for the most matches with no defeat in domestic competitions: 106 matches, between 1986 and1989.[1]

Steaua also has a negative record in Champions League: 23 matches with no victory, since 2013 (Steaua- Chelsea 0-1; the last won match was Dinamo Kiev- Steaua 1-4; Steaua has 7 draws and 16 defeats); the former holder of this record was Spartak Moscova (22 matches with no victory).[2] [3]

Dinamo Bucureşti (semi-finalist UEFA1984, semifinalist1989-1990 …)[1] and Universitatea Craiova (semi-finalist UEFA 82-83)[2] were good Romanian football teams.

Championships

Steaua and Dinamo won the most titles: Steaua won 24 championships, Dinamo won 18 championships, followed by UTA Arad (6).[3] The winners of Romania Cups were: Steaua (21), Dinamo (13), Rapid (13), Universitatea Craiova (6).[4]

Moţi became Dinamo hero after he transformed his penalty kick and stopped two penalty kicks of Steaua, preventing it from acceding to Champions League groups in the match against Ludogorets (final score 6-5). Bulgarian team had no more replacements to make and their goalkeeper Stoyanov was eliminated. Ludogorets scored in the last minute after 0-1 in previous match. Moţi played as defender for Dinamo Bucureşti.[1]

Romanian Championship

The Romanian championship ranked fifteenth, having 4.633 points in 2004-2014. The best championships were: England (11.187 points), Spain (10.779 points), and Italy (10.317 points). [1]

Best Goalkeepers

The best Romanian goalkeeper in 1985-2010 was Bogdan Stelea. Silviu Lung, Florin Prunea şi Bogdan Lobonţ were also good goalkeepers.[2]

Best Domestic Scorers

The best national championship scorer is Dudu Georgescu (Dinamo, 252 goals/370 matches, 0,68 goals/match), followed by Ionel Dănciulescu (Dinamo, 214 goals, 515 matches, 0,41 goals/match ) and Rodion Cămătaru (198 goals in 377 matches, 0,52 goals/match) .[3] [1]

Most Domestic Matches

Ionel Dănciulescu played 515 matches in the first division, setting the present record.[1]

Highest Domestic Salary

The highest salary in Romania in 2015 belonged to Alexandru Chipciu (170,000 lei/month or 38,000 Euros/month-gross salary, 30,000 Euros- net salary).[2]

Coaches

Ştefan Covaci

Ştefan Covaci is the best Romanian football coach. He won two European Champion Clubs’ Cup with Ajax (1971, 1972; it was an historical record of three consecutive wins of this trophy; the previous record- six consecutive wins- belonged to Real Madrid), two European Supercup (1972,1973), a Inter Continental Cup (1972)[1]. He also set a record in Ajax history: 19 consecutive wins (3.10.1971, Louis Van Gaal had also 19 consecutive wins on 9.04.1995), holding the third place, too, for his 17 consecutive wins (17.12. 1972).[2]

Emerich Jenei

Emerich Jenei won1986 European Champion Clubs’ Cup with Steaua Bucureşti [3]

Mircea Lucescu

Mircea Lucescu won UEFA Cup with Șahtior Donețk (2009). He was the fifth coach having 100 matches in Champions League after Scotish Alex Ferguson, French Arsene Wenger, Italian Carlo Ancelotti and Portughese Jose Mourinho (21.10.2015); his record was 35 wins, 24 draws and 41 defeats. Lucescu was the coach of Şahtior Doneţk (65), Galatasaray (26), Beşiktaş (6) and Internazionale Milano (3).[4]

Anghel Iordănescu

Anghel Iordănescu (Steaua Bucureşti) was the coach training the gold national team that got among the first eight football teams in the world in 1994. He is the best Romanian coach, ranking 65th (7 points), followed closely by Mircea Lucescu, ranking 76th (6 points) in 1996-2009.[5]

Miodrag Belodedici

Miodrag Belodedici is the Romanian football player with the best club performances: 1986 European Champion Clubs’ Cup and 1987 European Super Cup with Steaua Bucureşti, 1991 European Champion Clubs’ Cup and 1991 Intercontinental Cup with Red Star Belgrade).[1]Belodedici played as a sweeper (libero) for Minerul Moldova Nouă, Steaua Bucureşti, Red Star Belgrade, CF.Valencia, Real Valladoid, Villareal CF, CF Atlante and Steaua București again.[2]

Helmut Duckadam

Helmut Duckadam, Steaua goalkeeper, saved all four of Barcelona penalty kicks (the Romanians missed their first two, but then scored the next two and won the match) in 1986 European Champion Clubs’ Cup final.[1]

This performance is unbeaten in the Guinness World of Records.[1]

Gheorghe Hagi

Gheorghe Hagi is the best scorer of Romania national football team (35 goals, Adrian Mutu has also 35 goals), won the 2000 UEFA Cup and the 2000 European Super Cup with Galatasaray Istanbul. He played as midfielder for Sportul Studenţesc, Steaua, Real Madrid, Brescia, Barcelona, Galatasaray.[1]

Gheorghe Popescu

Gheorghe Popescu won the 1997 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup with Barcelona, as team captain, also won the 2000 UEFA Cup and the 2000 UEFA Super Cup playing for Galatasaray, next to Gheorghe Hagi. He played as defender for Universitatea Craiova, Steaua Bucureşti, PSV, Tottenham, Barcelona, Galatasaray, Lecce, Dinamo, Hannover 96.[2] [3]

Cristian Chivu

Cristian Chivu won the 2010 UEFA Champions League while playing for Internazionale Milano; he played as left defender for CSM Reşiţa, Universitatea Craiova, Ajax Amsterdam, AS Roma and Internazionale Milano.[1]

Dudu Georgescu

Dudu Georgescu (Dinamo Bucureşti) won the European Golden Shoe (for top scorer in Europe) twice, in 1975 (33 goals) and 1977 (47 goals).[2] [3] The record of 47 goals was beaten by Messi in 2012. He also holds the record for the most prolific forward in Romanian championship: 252 goals in 370 matches.[4]

Dan Petrescu

Dan Petrescu won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup (CWC) (1998) and the UEFA Super Cup (1998) while playing for Chelsea.

Florin Răducioiu

Florin Răducioiu won the European Champion Clubs’ Cup (1994) while playing for AC Milan.[1]

Cristian Săpunaru

Cristian Săpunaru won the Europa League (2011) while playing for F.C. Porto.[2] [3]

Adrian Mutu

Adrian Mutu scored 35 goals for Romania (equalling Gheorghe Hagi as national top scorer), occupied the 10th place among the best Italian scorers still playing, scoring 95 goals.[1] Mutu played as forward for F.C. Argeş, Dinamo, Internazionale Milano, Hellas Verona, Parma, Chelsea, Juventus, Fiorentina, Cesena, A.C.Ajaccio (France), Petrolul Ploieşti.[2] [3], Pune City (India), ASA Tg Mureş.

Best Domestic Performances

The best domestic performances were accomplished by Marius Lăcătuş (10 championships, 6 cups, 3 supercups) while playing for Steaua.[1]

Golden Shoe

Two Romanian football players won the Golden Shoe: Dudu Georgescu twice (74-75, 33 goals, 76-77, 47 goals) and Dorin Mateuț (88-89, 43 goals).[1][2]

Selections in the National Team

The football player with the largest number of selections in the national team is Dorinel Munteanu (134), followed by Hagi (124), Gheorghe Popescu (115), Ladislau Boloni (102), Dan Petrescu and Răzvan Raţ (95) (March 2014).[3]

Handball

The national handball team won seven world championships (three-feminine 1956, 1960, 1962, four.masculine-1961, 1964, 1970, 1974). The national team was lead by Niculae Nedeff, the best handball coach in the world.[1]

Știința București (1961), Rapid București (1964) and CSM Bucureşti (2016) won Champions League. CSM Bucureşti, trained by Kim Rasmussen, won against Gyor 29-26 (13-12, 22-22) in 2016.[2]

Oltchim Râmnicu-Vâlcea won five major European competitions (1983-two EHF Cup and European Supercup, 1988 EHF Cup, 2006-2007 – EHF Cup Winners’ Cup, EHF Champions Trophy). [3]

Cristian Gaţu

Cristian Gaţu won four major trophies, two World Championships for Romania (1970, 1974), two EHF Champions League for Steaua Bucureşti (1968, 1977) and was the best player in the world in 1974.[1]

Gheorghe Gruia

Gheorghe Gruia was the best handball player of all time according to the International Handball Federation (1992). He won two World Championships (1964-Czechoslovakia, 1970-France), the European Champions Cup (1968) for Steaua Bucharest. Gruia was also the scorer of Olympic Games in 1972, in Munchen, where he scored 37 goals. He scored 736 goals in 127 matches in his entire career.[2]

Cristina Neagu

She was the best female handball player of 2010, 2015 and 2016.[7][8]

Cristina Neagu played for Oltchim Râmnicu-Vâlcea and for the national team. She was the best scorer (53 goals), the best passer (34 decisive passes) in the European Championship in Danmark and Norvege, where Romania team came third. She was chosen as left inter in the ideal team of  tournament. For the first time ever a female player from Romania was the World Handball Player of the Year (2010).[3] [4] Cristina Neagu won the Champions League in 2015 while playing for Buducnost (Buducnost-Larvik 26-22) and was the best scorer of the competition (102 goals, the same number of goals were scored by Andrea Penezic).[5]Neagu was the best player in the 2015 World Championship in Denmark and the best scorer (63 goals, 104 throws, 61%) and the best left inter in the ideal team of championship.[6]

Tennis

Ilie Năstase

Ilie Năstase was the best Romanian tennis player. He won the 1972 US Open  (single),  the1973 Roland Garros (single) the 1970 Roland Garros  (double with Ion Țiriac), the 1973 Wimbledon (double) , the 1975 US Open  (double with Jimmy Connors),  the Wimbledon in 1970 and 1972 (mixed with Rosemary Casals).[1] He also won the Championship Tournament in 1971, 1972, 1973 and1975. He won the great prize FILT (1972, 1973).[2]

Năstase was number one in the world in 1973.[3] [4] Eight times between 1970 and 1977 he was ranked first in the World Top Ten.[5]

In 1973 he won 15 of 31 tourneys on a 118-17 match record, also eight doubles for an overall total of 23, tying Rod Laver’s open-era record (17 singles, 6 doubles), broken by John McEnroe’s 27 in 1979.

In 1976 Năstase was the first European tennis player to exceed $1 million in career prize money, and had a career total of about 2 million dollars [6] [7]

His singles records in the majors were: French (33-13), Wimbledon (35-15), US. (29-14) and Australian (0-1).[1]

The Romanian tennis player was one of five players to win more than 100 pro titles in singles (57) and doubles (51).[2]

Ilie Năstase had a splendid technique, but he argued a lot with referees, leading to fines, disqualifications and suspensions.

Ion Ţiriac

Ion Ţiriac won Rolland-Garros in 1990 with Ilie Năstase. [1] Țiriac was the coach of Guillermo Villas, Mary Joe Fernandez, Boris Becker and Goran Ivanisevici. Becker won five Grand Slam tournaments with Țiriac as coach. He organized two of the greatest Masters 1000 tournaments, Italian Open and Madrid Masters. He is the owner of BRD Năstase Ţiriac Trophy, a ATP World Tour 250 yearly event. Țiriac entered the International Tennis Hall of Fame, section contribution to tennis development through coaching and promotion of great tournaments, in 2013.  The other Romanian sport players in Hall of Fame are: Iolanda Balaş (athletics), Eduard Pană şi Doru Tureanu (hochey), Nadia Comăneci, Bela Karoly, Ecaterina Szabo, Teodora Ungureanu, Octavian Bellu, Daniela Silivaş, Simona Amânar şi Lavinia Miloşovici (gymnastics).[2]

Horia Tecău

Horia Tecău won the 2012 Australian Open with the American Bethanie Mattek-Sands.[1]

Horia Tecău/Robert Lindstedt (Romania/Sweden) won 2012 Masters 1000 in Cincinatti. They were awarded €165,860 and 1000 ATP points.[2]

Tecău and Rojer won 2015 Wimbledon and were awarded 475,000 Euros and 2000 ATP points. Tecău is the second Romanian winning Wimbledon after Ilie Năstase (with Jimmie Connors) in 1973.[3]

Tecău and Rojer (Romania/Netherlands) became no.1 in Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings in November 2015.

Tecău and Rojer won Champions Tournament in 2015 with no set lost in the entire tournament (a record for the present form of Champions Tournament, since 1986). They won 423,000 dollars and 1,500 points.[4] [5]

Tecău and Rojer won 2016 Madrid Tournament, beating  Florin Mergea/Rohan Bopanna (6-4, 7-6) in 2016. The prize was 282,720 Euros.[6]

Virginia Ruzici

Virginia Ruzici (born 31 January 1955, Câmpia Turzii, Cluj district) was the best Romanian female tennis player

Virginia Ruzici won 11 singles titles, including one Grand Slam title, the 1978 French Open (final against Mima Jaušovec 6-2, 6-2). Her highest ranking (single) was no.8 at 21 May 1979. She won 377 matches and lost 221 matches. (single)

Ruzici also won the Roland Garros doubles with Jaušovec in 1978 and reached the mixed doubles final in 1977, becoming one of only seven women to reach all three finals of one Grand Slam in the open era. She won 284 matches and lost 181. Ruzici won 15 career titles. Her highest ranking in doubles was no. 70 (12 October 1987).

A victory of Ruzici at a tournament in Salt Lake City, in 1980, was watched by Richard Williams, who decided to teach his daughters, Venus and Serena, to play tennis.

Her professional career lasted from 1975-1987 and won $1,183,728 (career prize money).[1][2]
