Nicolae Paulescu

Nicolae Paulescu (1869-1931) was a physiologist, had a key-role in creation of insulin, the medicine for diabetes. He invented pancreina (Patent nr.6255). Paulescu held anti-Semitic ideas and helped others to found the National Christian Union in 1922, which in 1923 became the National Christian Defence League (LANC), an anti-Semitic party.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]He was a strong antidarwinist. Paulescu was affected by hematuria (presence of red blood cells in urine) a long time and died of cancer. He lived both in France and in Romania.[6]

George Emil Palade

George Emil Palade   (1912- 2008.) was a cell biologist, won the Nobel Prize in 1974 (with Albert Claude and Christian de Duve).[7] [8] His most important discovery was: microsomes, bodies formerly thought to be fragments of mitochondria, are actually parts of the endoplasmatic reticulum (internal cellular transport system) and have a high ribonucleic acid (RNA) content. They were subsequently named ribosomes.[9] [10] Since 1946 he lived in United States of America.[11]

Petrache Poenaru

Petrache Poenaru (1799-1875) engineer, patented first never-ending portable pen, that recharges itself with ink (plume portable sans fin, qui s’alimente elle-meme avec de l’ancre, 1827, Paris, number 3208)[12]. It was the first Romanian patent. The ink was pushed by gentle press of the tube (pipe) in Poenarus pen, later the piston was invented and Lewis Edson Waterman made the pen charging with ink through the nib in 1884.[13]Poenaru was Tudor Vladimirescu s secretary, then lived in Austria, France and England (was the first Romanian travelling by train in 1831, just a year after the invention taking place on the 15th of September, 1830). Then returned to Romania, became a teacher and headmaster of Sf. Sava College and held high administrative positions regarding education and culture. Poenaru published first courses (textbooks) on geometry and algebra (translations) and contributed to the first French-Romanian Dictionary (with F. Aaron and Gh. Hill, 1840-1841).[14] He created many public schools. Petrache Poenaru insisted on the introduction of the decimal metric system (finally succeeded in 1864, after a long fight). [15] [16] He laid stress upon using Romanian instead of Greek or French in schools.[17]
